City targeting for Geonotice

  • Problem: Local Wikimedia chapters in the United States cannot run geonotices as they would target a significantly larger population (10x) than intended.

Tool for organizers of editing contests

  • Problem: Organizers of editing contests have special needs for metrics that are not being met by current metrics tools like Grant Metrics or the Program and Events Dashboard. We need a system to measure contributions made during editing contests.
  • Who would benefit: Every Wikimedia project. Also would make metrics easier.
  • Proposed solution: There is a bot used in some Wikipedias (no, fi, eu... afaik) called UKBot that makes this tasks easy. (Currently this bot is only ran by a person and you have to contact him to get it working.) Provide functionality similar to that.

  • Hi Theklan. A tool to better serve the needs of contest organizers sounds like a great goal. But the proposal as written is not appropriate for voting, since it focuses on a particular solution. Please rewrite the wish to refocus on the problems of contest organizers rather than on UKBot specifically. Please change the title, and it would be great if you could mention a few of the things that you need whatever tool is adopted to do (e.g., provide a figure for edits per user, etc.). If you don't get to this, I'll revise and save the wish for voting, but I'm sure you would do a better job. Hi @Theklan:. I made an effort to refocus this page on the problem instead of on UKBot specifically. It would be nice if you or someone who knows about editing contests could add in a few examples of things that general metrics programs like Grant Metrics or the in-progress Event Metrics don't or won't do. E.g., Event Metrics will give you the number of edits made during an event, the number of bytes changed, articles created, articles improved, images uploaded, Wikidata items created and more. But it won't break that down on a per user basis, so you could see what user did the most—which I imagine you might want for a contest?—JMatazzoni (WMF) (talk) 22:39, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmatazzoni: Event metrics could be great for event organizers, but contest organization is a different thing: we need to know who is doing what and give points based on that. That's why UKBot is so great (and so simple). Once you make get the contest running, it will make it's work all the time.
