Hey @Touzrimounir: and @Hamed gamaoun:, this looks like a good project. The scope and planning are well defined. I would advise you to clarify the required budget more in detail. If I read it now, I have some questions. $1250 (almost 50% of full project cost!) is provided for transport, this looks like a lot. Can you clarify the travel you plan to do? MADe (talk) 10:24, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Dear @MADe: thank you for your question, as you can see the training of three days must be made by an expert of quality images in Wikimidia commons and photography, on Tunisia there is no wikimedia commons users able to organize this training, so we will invite a user from another country able to realize this training (as an example, Spain or Germany) --Touzrimounir (talk) 11:35, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Touzrimounir: Any idea how you would look for this user? Had any discussions with European chapters? How exactly did you budget fr for the travel? Interesting questions worth being discussed in the grant. MADe (talk) 18:53, 16 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi @MADe: I spoke with two users from Germany (Cccefalon andHubertl) about my first Workshop and QI and Quality Image from wiki loves africa Tunisia, but I have to wait for confirmation of grant to talk with users, about Criteria of selections of the users
he should have more than 500 QI
speak English and French
know how to fix photos
know how to use tools of wikimedia commons.
About the budget : the travel will not exceed 500 $ because the user will be from Europe,as you can see from this list, most users have QI live in Europe --Touzrimounir (talk) 19:46, 16 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
I guess MADe asked for position called "Transportation" (last entry in your budget table - 1000 USD). Cost of transportation of the trainer is already included under the name "travel of the wikimedia commons user (trainer )" (also 1000 USD). Polimerek (talk) 13:22, 18 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Polimerek: first the Transportation budget is 500 USD not 100 USD, 250 USD will be paid by the WMF, and it is included the Transportation of participants from Tunis(capital city of Tunisia) To the location of the training, loin 200 km from Tunis --Touzrimounir (talk) 18:53, 18 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

NB Personal abuse from GAC members is unacceptable in this thread.

@Touzrimounir: and @Hamed gamaoun:, this looks like a good project, with a rather modest budget (too modest?).
Dear @Tony1: Please see the the answers below:

  1. It's great that you've got personal contacts in the photographers' association.

We organized a meeting with the association about this projet and the first workshop was organized in November 14, 2015, and we will organize another workshop in December. the association will participate in all photo contest of wikimedia Tunisia like wiki loves earth and wiki wiki Loves Monuments 2016

  1. How will you advertise the activity?

the advertise of the event will be in the association, and only photographer who has more than 100 photos in commons and has nominate at less 10 photos as QI will participate in the workshops,

  1. Is it not hard to estimate the travel budget for the presenter without knowing where they'll be coming from?

I made a List of users by the number of Quality images uploaded, as you can see, all users from Europe, than the cost of travel budget will not exceed 500$

  1. Will all participants be able to speak English/French?

Yes all participants speak French very well, and understand English

  1. Will the training encompass the particular issues involved in photographing buildings, human subjects, landscape, and wildlife? Has the location of the training been chosen because it's close to good photographic opportunities in this respect? There are some learning patterns on Meta, but they're on relatively narrow topics. Will the sessions be structured by theme, and alternate inside and outside, teaching and practice?

Of course the training encompass the particular issues involved in photographing buildings, human subjects, landscape, and wildlife, and for this we have chosen this location as it is close to El Feidja National Park, and we will organize a technical photos walk in this park

  1. Just for interest, is there freedom of panorama in Tunisia? Any other copyright sensitivities?

In Tunisia, we have not laws about freedom of panorama

  1. The budget is really hard to read. Looks like hundreds of thousands of US dollars for some things—unsure. It would be much clear to remove the "cents", rounding up or down.

I think it is ok now --Touzrimounir (talk) 20:13, 21 November 2015 (UTC) Tony (talk) 07:44, 21 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your responses, Touzrimounir. This looks like a worthy project. The most challenging aspects will be to get a photographer who's good at teaching, and to design a curriculum that will engage with the participants and result in a high level of skill acquisition. Hi Touzrimounir and Hamed gamaoun, thank you for your work on this request, and to plan this project. We are pleased that your User Group has identified ways to improve outcomes in future photography contests and events. Thank you to community and GAC members who posted questions and comments. They have been helpful for understanding the scope of this project and the challenges that organizers have considered in the planning process. Please see our questions, comments and suggestions below:

  • How did the first session go with the initial 50 participants? Have you chosen 25 people to participate in the 3 day workshop?
The first session was a presentation about Wiki Loves Africa and Quality images, featured pictures and valued images. We will organize the second session after the approval of the grant and we will announce the project, only photographs who have Wikimedia account and have uploaded photos in Wikimedia commons will take part of this program, the participants will be selected after the next session that we think it will be held in January 2016
  • Have you considered asking participants to help organize or participate in future photography activities, contests and events? Will participants be asked to act as judges in future contests, or to lead sessions to teach future contest participants skills that they have learned?
Yes, the majority of participants will take part of all future photography activities, contests with Wikimedia Tunisia like Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Monuments, and they will help organizing this event, and participants will be able to organize a workshop about Wikimedia Commons and Quality images with the Tunisian Association of photographers, it will be 2 or 3 workshops of Wikimedia commons every year with this association
  • What percentage of images from past contests were nominated or rated as quality images? What kind of improvement do you hope to see as a result of this training program?
Wiki Loves Africa 2015 more than 200 photos nominated as Quality photos but only 12 photos rated as QI
Wiki Loves Earth 2015 more than 250 photos nominated as Quality photos but only 12 photos rated as QI
Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 more than 100 photos nominated as Quality photos but only 9 photos rated as QI
The main objective is to improve the quality of images and the Second objective is to increase the number of Tunisian contributing on Wikimedia projects
  • How will you follow up with participants from the initial training, and from the three day workshop so that you are able to meet goals of increasing new active volunteers and goals around images in use on projects?
After the second workshop (will be organized on January 2016), we will ask participants to upload and nominate photos to QI and use photos in Wikipedia, and we will get a list of all user names of participants in commons, and during the three days they will upload more photos in Wikimedia commons, also I will prepare a list of Wikipedia articles about Tunisia Without photos and we will ask participants to take photos for those articles.
  • Do you have sufficient support from other volunteers to organize this event, and conduct follow up with participants after the event?
Yes, many members of the Tunisian Association of photographers are ready to organize this event and to follow with participants, and they will help Wikimedia Tunisia to organize Wiki loves earth this year 2016.
  • Will participants be encouraged to use new skills or tools to improve images from past Wiki Loves contests?
Yes, the input of our training is all photos of WLM2015, WLMA 2015 and WLAf 2015 in Tunisia, where was nominated as QI but not promoted as QI, we will present all Wikimedia commons tool that help photographers to improve photos.
  • Are there any factors that may put the project at risk, or make it difficult to reach the goals of your project?
if we do not find a Wikimedia common user accept to animate this training.--Touzrimounir (talk) 08:25, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Please let us know if you need clarification on these comments. We look forward to your responses and hope to post a decision on this request during the first week of January. Cheers, --KHarold (WMF) (talk) 18:50, 28 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
