Help with removing Translation tag

Can anyone remove all the translation tag from this page? The page is getting bigger day by day and it's not necessary to translate all the contents of this page. Wasiul Bahar (talk) 11:15, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Request for feedback on the Translation Notifications extension

Hello everyone,

Hope this message finds you well.

The Language Team would like to receive feedback about the Translation notifications extension. If you use (or used) this extension to send or receive notifications we would like to hear from you.

We have previously received reports about the notifications being a bit spammy and notifying too many people, which made administrators hesitant to use it. We would like to highlight how we’ve addressed this issue but before that we’d like to discuss the following:

  • Explain how the Translation notification operates to avoid any misconceptions about its behavior
  • Improvements made to the extension to reduce the number of notifications sent
  • Receive your feedback about the Translation notification extension

How does the Translation notifications extension work?

The translation notifications extension is used to notify translators who wish to help translate content, specifically translatable pages, of requests to translate a page into their language.

Translators can sign up for notifications for languages they wish to translate on the Special:TranslatorSignup page. Subscribers can choose to receive notifications via email or on the talk page on a wiki of their choice. They can choose to be notified as soon as the request is sent or, they can select the option of receiving a periodical, weekly or monthly digest if a notification was sent out during that time.

Translation administrators can use the Special:NotifyTranslators page to notify subscribed translators when new or updated content is available for translation. The page allows the administrator to filter the languages they wish to notify the translators for, select the translatable page they want to be translated, and set the priority and deadline to submit translations.

When sending the notification, if the translation administrator selects specific languages, only translators who are subscribed to those languages will be notified.

And that's it! Translation notifications is a simple extension that we hope can help localize more content and draw translators attention to content that is relevant. Please let us know if you have any questions about the functionality provided by this extension.

Improvements made to the Translation notifications extension

To address some of the concerns about the extension being too spammy, we have configured a script  to run every 3 months to remove subscribers who have been inactive for a year. We added functionality to skip sending notifications for some languages that should help administrators narrow down the audience they want to deliver the notification.

In addition, we made it easier for existing subscribers [1][2] to unsubscribe from receiving notifications.

Request for your feedback

We would now like to hear from you if you have any concerns while using this extension and what more we could do to improve confidence amongst administrators when using it. Please leave your comments on this thread.

Thanks for your time.

Thank for this clear notice!
It is often difficult to judge whether a translation request requires a notification. In my opinion, the best design would be to have an advanced priority system with expiry deadlines. In this way, a newsletter could have “Urgency” priority (highest) until 15 January, then automatically subsided to “Historical” (lowest); whereas another page would have “Documentation” priority (middle). Translators would choose how to be notified depending of the priority and deadline (for short deadline, being notified through a monthly digest does not make sense). -- Pols12 (talk) 14:36, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Update request

Hi, can anyone review the update on this template? I need to review for continue to my works. Kurmanbek💬 13:37, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Done For new content, you should not set manually the unit markers (<!--T:xx-->): they are automatically handled. I have only reused them for which the content have not changed. -- Pols12 (talk) 03:15, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Living Heritage subpages

Do we really want to have dozens of subpages from Wiki Loves Living Heritage marked for translation? They are frequently updated by ListeriaBot and need to be marked for translation after every edit. Typically there is no real content to translate on these pages, e.g. Wiki Loves Living Heritage/Elements. --Ameisenigel (talk) 16:30, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

It's a very complex data-related page. Maybe it's intentional? I tried by creating an Urdu sub-page but I couldn't find anything in Urdu. Perhaps because Wikidata items on the page don't have Urdu labels and else. @Susannaanas can tell better. ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:11, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
If the bot frequently update them, we can consider designing a system where the bot only work on a transcluded subpage/template. So main page would only be edited by humans. -- Pols12 (talk) 19:01, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
That would be useful. --Ameisenigel (talk) 14:24, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
That should do the trick. However, I’ve not enough time to apply it elsewhere for now. -- Pols12 (talk) 20:38, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

Message group Celebrate Women?

Hi translation admins,

We've got a presentation today about the upcoming Celebrate Women event and I want to talk about language translation statistics for a bit. The link for translations works, but when I click on "message group statistics" in the top (which shows me the # of languages the page has been translated in) all of a sudden the group does not seem to exist? Manually inserting the message group name from the URL also does not help me. Appreciate your help. Ciell (talk) 09:19, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

(No rush, my bit in the presentation has ended. Still curious if anyone knows the answer though?) Ciell (talk) 17:09, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
I checked with MessageGroup statistics for this specific page and it works finely. ─ Aafī (talk) 18:39, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
Ah, I think I know what I did wrong, thanks Aafi! 1) no underscore in the title, 2) select from drop down menu. Strange though that does not work when I click the button/tab in the top from the translation interface: "Display preferences" -> "Message Group of prefix" is empty. Page not displaying changes properly

So I manually reverted vandalism on Wikimedia user groups/ms. The edit shows up on my contribs page and recent changes, but not on the article or its history. What went wrong? Mox Eden (talk) 05:40, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

@Mox Eden do you mean this edit? [1] Changes to the page title never show up on the translated page. As you can see from the version history [2] the IP's vandalism of the title doesn't show up as well. But if you read Wikimedia user groups/ms you'll see it says „Kumpulan pengguna Wikimedia“ now, just as intended :) Johannnes89 (talk) 06:49, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
@Johannnes89: No, it doesn't. It still shows up as a bunch of gibberish for me. Mox Eden (talk) 06:53, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
I just purged the page. If it still doesn't work for you Mox, try refreshing your browser cashe. (Or use another browser for testing) Der-Wir-Ing ("DWI") talk 06:57, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

@Pols12, hello again! How can I change the image of this template to a version translated into English, like here? Sorry for taking your time once again. Vsdetoni (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 18:38, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
Oh, I missed (again) to change language to pt-br for this template. I have added file name as a translatable unit, so you can change it from usual Translate tool. --Pols12 (talk) 19:39, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
Hello, @Pols12! Thank you very much once again for the modification! I noticed that the clickable "back" button was incorporated into the header template. Thus, the button is also present on the main page. However, the idea of the "back" button is to redirect to the main page. Therefore, it is redundant to have the back button on the main page. I didn't want to make this adjustment myself because I understand that it will also change the template in English. Should you make this adjustment, or should I do it myself? Thanks! Vsdetoni (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 13:24, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
@Pols12 Additionally, we need to translate the footer as well, the titles above the logos. Can you create a template /en for that too? Vsdetoni (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 13:32, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
@Vsdetoni Please review this diff before we mark again the page for translation, because I’m not sure whether we are in the good version after the edit war.
For header, I have added a condition to exclude Back button from home page. About footer, I have marked the headings for translation; please tell me if you need some logos to be localizable too. --Pols12 (talk) 23:20, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
Hello, @Pols12! We are indeed having problems with vandalism on our page. Thank you very much for notifying us about this one as well! Thanks also for the adjustments on my requests. Could I ask you for a few more small things? Could you set the header to Brazilian Portuguese so we can translate it into English? Additionally, could you: 1) correct the redirection of the main page in English to the "learn more about the project" page (it is redirecting to the page in Portuguese)?; 2) mark the entire information box of the workshops page for translation, including the titles "dia," "horário," "duração," "intervalo," etc.?; 3) I would also like to be able to hyperlink to the meta user page the names of the facilitators listed in the workshop "boxes". Thank you very much for your support. Vsdetoni (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 13:07, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
  • 0. The header is already set in Brazilian Portuguese. “English” translations were automatic, you may want to review them. My error.
  1. I have just added Special:MyLanguage prefix.
  2. The information box titles are translatable at Template:Mais_Teoria_da_História_na_Wiki/Oficina.
  3. You can add wikilinks at Wikipédia:Projeto Mais Teoria da História na Wiki/Mais Mulheres 2024/Programação de oficinas, turning |Facilitadora1 = Bob into |Facilitadora1 = [[user:WikiBob1|Bob]]

@Pols12Pols12, thank you for your tireless support! I'm sorry if some requests are things I could be doing myself. I'm a beginner in the Wikimedia universe.
We made some final updates to the pages and would like to know if you could once again do the marking for translation. We have added more images and would also like to be able to add the translated images to the English version.
Ah, I remembered one thing. In my last contact with you, I mentioned an adjustment in the header, but I was referring to the footer. Could you, therefore, make the titles above the logos in the footer translatable? Thank you once again. Vsdetoni (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 18:07, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello, I kindly ask if you can change the mark up of the links in this site. The links of the forms change their numbers according to the language so this marking doesn't work: {{Blue button|text=<translate><!--T:10--> Solicita una beca completa aquí</translate>|elink=https://wikimedistasuy.limesurvey.net/982325?lang={{TRANSLATIONLANGUAGE}}}}.

Wiki Loves Living Heritage translations

I had not worked on Living Heritage elements since the beginning of the year, and now that I checked on it, I had to revert several changes to make the pages function again.

@Pols12 I am returning pages transferred to subpages back to where they were. However, I noticed that this works somewhere, and found another reason for pages disappearing, so let's monitor the situation. I have not made the changes consistently across the pages yet.

The actual reason for the UNESCO list pages disappearing was a change someone had made in the data structure. This change was not well-grounded, and I must see that there will not be back-and-forth changes to it.

@Minorax I think the disappearance of the submenus was due to your changes in the Main navigation component. I reverted the change and now the submenus work again.

Sorry I had not noticed a discussion earlier this year about the pages.

Cheers, Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) 🦜 17:52, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

Sorry @Susannaanas, I posted on your talk page before seeing your message here. Thank you for having working on that issue and having open this discussion. 🙂 The issue does not come from /list subpage hack; I have restored Wiki Loves Living Heritage/Elements to demonstrate it does work.
However, the “Manually update list” link did not work from main pages, so I just have edited the template to make the link update /list subpage when it exists.
We need this hack, because there are too many pages which are too often edited by bot: that is polluting list of pages which need to be marked for translation.
By the way, please share the framework code you copy to create pages, because it contains some issues we may want to fix before pages are created. For example, it seems to miss the <languages/> bar. I also would like to integrate the /list subpage hack in that framework code and in your workflow to create pages.

Using the Language selector to switch language of translatable pages

Greetings,

Translatable pages allow contents such as project documentation on Mediawiki.org to be multilingual. Currently a flat list with all languages in which the content is available is listed above the page contents. As the content is translated into more languages, this makes it hard for users to find the content in their language (they have to scan a long list or rely on the browser search), clutters the page, and pushes the content down.

Language list on top of multilingual page on MediaWiki.org

Wikipedia page connected to other language versions

To address this issue, the Language and Product Localization team is implementing a change to use the Language selector from ULS for language selection on Vector 2022. This aims to ensure consistency with the way languages are selected on other projects, such as Wikipedia.

Specifically, the configuration option ($wgPageTranslationLanguageList = 'sidebar-only';) that we are planning to use would display languages as interlanguage links only and ignore the tag even if present on the page. You can see this in action on translatewiki.net:

  1. Vector 2022: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=vector-2022
  2. Timeless: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=timeless
  3. Vector legacy: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=vector

We’re planning to enable this on Test Wikipedia first, and then roll-out on all wikis where Translate extension is enabled based on community feedback. Feel free to leave your feedback here, or on the Phabricator task.

FAQ

Q: Why are we making this change?

A: Currently a flat list of all languages to which the page is translated is displayed at the top of page contents. As the content is translated into more languages, this makes it hard for users to find the content in their language (they have to scan a long list or rely on the browser search), clutters the page, and pushes the content down. Using the Language selector from ULS, makes the available language list searchable and clears up the top of the page to display the actual content. It also brings uniformity to how content language selection is done across our sites.

Q: Will I still be able to see the translation progress for each language?

A: Yes, translation statistics for each language will be displayed within circles in the same manner that it is displayed currently. The special page Special:MessageGroupStats can also be used to view per language translation statistics.

Q: Where can I see this in action?

A: This change is already active on translatewiki.net. You can see it in action there:

  1. Vector 2022: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=vector-2022
  2. Timeless: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=timeless
  3. Vector legacy: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Project:About?useskin=vector

Q: How will this change affect the ULS for other projects like Wikipedia? Currently, the ULS in Wikipedia shows and links to Wikipedias that have the translated version of the same article in other languages. How will this new workflow affect the Wikipedia User Interface?

A: This change will not have any impact on projects that do not use the Translate extension and as such Wikipedia and its sister sites will not be impacted.

Q: This new ULS menu design shows 20 languages before scrolling. Does it mean I have to scroll and skim through maybe 90 languages to access my language if it is the last on the list?

A: No, you won't have to scroll all the way. You can type the two or three letters of your language in the Universal Language Selector for the search to fetch your language translation.

In addition, the Universal Language Selector uses different techniques to determine which languages will be most relevant to you, and displays those at the top.

Q: What is the roll-out plan?

A: We’re planning to enable this on Test Wikipedia first, followed by MediaWiki.org and then roll-out on all wikis where the Translate extension is enabled.

Thanks! APatro (WMF) (talk) 13:14, 14 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi @APatro (WMF) thanks for the change, sounds great!
How will the language selection deal with pages, which exists locally in many different translations, but currently also link to versions of this page on other projects?
Example: There are many translations of No open proxies (e.g. No open proxies/de), but the VE2022 language selection currently links to Wikipedia versions of that page (e.g. de:WP:Keine offenen Proxys). Johannnes89 (talk) 14:06, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for your feedback, Johannes.
I was not aware of this use case. This will have to be handled differently, not something that I had considered. I'll check with team.

I think we may remove Meta-Wiki from Wikipedia “pool”: English Wikipedia is already linked in “In other projects” section from Tools menu. As an improvement, we can link French Wikipedia in the same place when we are reading French translation (e.g. No_open_proxies/fr), and so on.
The current design (both ULS for Wikipedia links and language bar for local translations) do has been confusing anyway. Let’s go ahead removing that dubious feature. Pols12 (talk) 23:38, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
Hello, thanks for your work! Perhaps adding a notice at the top of the page to remind users of this UI change (similar to the Vector 2022 one) would be helpful? SCP-2000 15:29, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
That's a good idea! Regards, APatro (WMF) (talk) 09:42, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

Request for assistance/checking

I have no idea if I've broken something or not...but I was trying to null-edit Translations:Wikimedia Bangladesh/Responsibilities/4/sv, and ended up doing this instead. When I then undid that edit (assuming it was a mistake, as I'd only intended to null-edit the page), it seems I also caused this to happen.

At this point I don't want to do anything more in case I accidentally break anything further, so I'd greatly appreciate it if someone with more knowledge about translations than me could take a look and fix anything that I might have broken. All the best, and apologies for causing problems! ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 21:41, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

Inserting !!FUZZY!! on a translation page [3] causes the translated text to appear in a wrapper [4], marking it as not fully translated – which is correct in this Swedish translation, because some of the links are wrong and all of them are labelled as members, instead of mentioning roles like president etc. Johannnes89 (talk) 06:38, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

Suggestions, opinions

Hello fellow T-admins, I am attending the upcoming Wikimedia Technology Summit in Hyderbad, scheduled to take place in the first week of October. I have submitted a basic/medium workshop proposal around Translation administration which is available at WTS 2024/Submissions/Multiple languages & Internationalisation: Translation Administration on Wikimedia projects. I would appreciate any suggestions/opinions. Kind regards. signed, Aafi (talk) 13:01, 1 September 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Aafi: you're very welcome to get inspired from and reuse the materials for the workshop I gave at Wikimania 2024! You'll find the Google slides here (you can duplicate the doc or download a local version to edit as you please). Good luck with the workshop and thanks for spreading information about the translate extension! Auregann (talk) 07:09, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Please fix error

Community Wishlist/Wishes displays the /bn version of my wish instead of the original English-language one like it used to. I have already requested this to be fixed at other places but it still hasn't been fixed. Please fix this issue, thank you! Prototyperspective (talk) 13:01, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Prototyperspective: Not something that I can help with. It is an issue with {{Community Wishlist/Wishes}}. Perhaps @Pppery might be able to fix it. I am a newbie with regards to templates. signed, Aafi (talk) 14:42, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

I notice that Community Wishlist/Wishes/A tile for the Current events portal in the Wikipedia app/en didn't exist, dispite it have been marked for translation. I just null-marked the page and I think it's fixed now. Cookai🍪 (💬talk) 15:49, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
