PhilWiki Community/Annual Plan 2023/Report
This is the Final Report of the 2023-2024 Annual Plan of PhilWiki Community covering activities from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
Our Annual Plan is consistent with the strategic direction of Movement Strategy, centering on the goals of knowledge equity and knowledge as a service. Our strategy is simplified into 5Ps or Promotion - Participation - Partnership - Pursuit of Purpose.
- Promotion by raising the awareness of Wikimedia projects in the country as a platform that serves open knowledge
- Participation by increasing participation from all sectors of the society
- Partnership by creating opportunities through collaboration with public and private organizations and benefit from sharing free, essential knowledge
- Pursuit of Purpose thru practice and demonstration of our values and by pursuing our mission for the humanity
Promotion
editUnder the Advocacy, and Education Programs of the Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group, it has initiated cost-effective, creative, and innovative projects to spur interest and promote Wikipedia both online and offline among individuals. In the past, its members have appeared in a number of local media programs and have been invited or attended fora and conferences to share about Wikimedia projects.
PH-WC also deals with the promotion of free, responsibly open-content resources and reference materials within and thru academic institutions. It supports active learning and education programs of Wikimedia Foundation. In the past, PH-WC held WikiTutorial which engaged teachers and students as participants in editing tutorials and as trainers and facilitators in related activities. It was a thought partner of now defunct Reading Wikipedia In The Classroom in 2020 however it remains an advocate of different education programs of Wikimedia Foundation, Wiki Education Foundation, Wikipedia and Education User Group, among others. It has several members who are educators, from junior and high school teachers to college professional instructors.
This year, we identified the following activities: Conduct campaigns for junior and secondary students namely basic editing session and participation in WikiProjects, WikiClubs; Membership recruitment thru call for volunteers and orientation, Wiknics and Meetups; Develop IEC materials promoting open source thru production of information, education and communication materials; Promote Wikipedia in schools and universities thru webinars and trainings, editing activities; Integrate Wikipedia in lesson thru development of 21st Century skills, research writing, editing activities; Create content on Philippine educational system thru WikiProyekto Edukasyon.
Results
editThis year, we formally partnered with the City Government of Naga, Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement Inc., and the Bikol Wikipedia Community, and collaborated with various organizations and educational institutions promoting history, heritage, culture, and open knowledge. We also relaunched our education program encompassing the different initiatives of the User Group under Wiki Education Philippines (Wiki Edu PH). Currently, we are supporting 4 Wiki Clubs namely: CBSUA Wiki Society, CBSUA Wiki Club, CNHS Wiki Club, and Wiki Club Minalabac.
- October 15, 2023 - Thru the Advocacy Program headed by Ian Kenneth L. Orasa, PH-WC collaborated with the Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement, Inc., the City Government of Naga, Centro Naga Business Club, Sumaro Bikolnon, UAP Camarines Chapter, Partido State University Center for Partido Studies, Partido State University Extension and Community Services Division, Bikol Historical Research Center, and ADNU Social Sciences Department, in the celebration of the 437th founding anniversary of Ciudad de Nueva Caceres. Dr. Danilo M. Gerona delivered a comprehensive presentation on Revisiting La Ciudad de Nueva Caceres supported with documents from Archivo Franciscano Ibero Oriental, Museo Naval, Real Academia de la Historia and Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid, and the Archivo General de Indias in Seville. He talked about the glorious past of the Nueva Caceres as one of the first four Spanish royal cities in Asia.[1]
- October 25,2023 - The CBSUA Wiki Club was launched in partnership with PH-WC and Bikol Wikipedia Community. The roots of the partnership can be traced back to 2012, with conferences and training sessions involving CBSUA faculty and students beginning in 2017. An activity agreement would be signed between CBSUA, Bikol Wikipedia Community, and the PhilWiki Community to outline the responsibilities of the parties involved. CBSUA Wiki Education, a joint program of the International Relations Office of CBSUA-Calabanga, Bikol Wikipedia Community and the PhilWiki Community, marks a significant milestone as the first university-based Wiki community in the Philippines.[2][3]
- October 25-26, 2023 - PhilWiki Community promoted its language preservation and cultural heritage advocacies at the SIRANG Perspectives and Prospect: International Conference on Understanding the Contemporary Landscape Through the Lens of History and Heritage held at Ateneo de Naga University. PH-WC served as one of the partners in the international conference.[4][5]
- December 13, 2023 - Thru the Education Program headed by Marife Altabano, PH-WC conducted seminar-workshop attended by high school students taking the subject Practical Research at Cararayan National High School. The activity featured two teacher-Wikimedians who discussed Navigating Wikipedia and Tips on Validating Information, and Proper Citation in Academic Research. The attendees explored the features of Wikipedia thru games and quizzes. More than 20 students among the participants had managed to create a username.[6] During the event, the Wiki Education Philippines logo was officially launched and the CNHS Wiki Club was established. The attendees selected their interim officers with their teacher in practical research as the adviser.
- January 26, 2024 - Teachers participated in the Wiki Quiz as part of the presentation on the utilization of Wikimedia in class during the 5-day In-service Training of Teachers at DepEd Minalabac District, Division of Camarines Sur. Proper citation and Relicensing were also discussed to over 50 teachers and school heads in attendance. At the end of the session, outputs were presented and at least 20 teachers signified to participate in the upcoming Wiki-related activities, in the formation of a Wiki Club for teachers in Minalabac and in organizing a teacher's training on Wikimedia next school year 2024-2025.[7]
- February 9, 2024 - Primary school teachers attended their first Wiki meet up at Cocoland Farm and Resort in Minalabac with PhilWiki Community President Maffeth O. Sto. Tomas for the formation of a Wiki Club. Nora Rejalde of Antipolo Elementary School (AES) was elected president of the organization. MaryGrace Valencia of Malitbog Elementary School was chosen as the vice president. Rose Ann Navales and Janice Penetrante from AES, and Shyrel Jacobe from Magadap Elementary School were appointed secretary, treasurer and auditor, respectively. Nora, MaryGrace and Rose Ann have previously attended the Bikol WikiConference 2023 and WikiCommons PH Conference 2023 held last year.[8]
- April 6, 2024 - Twenty-two senior high students actively participated in WikiQuest: Journey through the World of Wikis as part of the Wiki Education Philippines program of PhilWiki Community at DepEd Naga Division. Assisted by their teachers, the participants completed a set of tasks related to Wiki collaboration by exploring the open educational resource and getting familiarized with some of the basic actions in contributing to the project.
- Teacher-Wikimedians from Cararayan NHS, Camarines Sur NHS, San Juan NHS, Antipolo ES and CBSUA served as facilitators in the fun-filled activity wherein the newbie editors performed simple tasks such as 'Fix It' or fixing grammatical and typographical errors on Wikipedia, 'Categorize It' or adding images to appropriate categories on Wikimedia Commons, 'Transcribe It' or transcribing and proofreading pages on Wikisource, and more.
- All Grade 12 participants are members of the Cararayan National High School Wiki Club, a pilot extra-curricular organization formed in 2023. Marife Altabano, the committee chair of the Wiki Education Philippines program serves as the club's adviser. The club will welcome interested Grade 11 and junior high school students starting next school year.
- June 1, 2024 - In celebration of its 9th anniversary, The PhilWiki Community Blog was launched to give the latest updates of our activities and related news around the Wikimedia movement. Inspired by the Diff blog, it is a space dedicated for up-to-date and relevant information beyond the confines of social media and Wikimedia platforms.
Participation
editUnder our Diversity, and Outreach Programs, PH-WC aims to engage a diverse participation to address the gender and knowledge gaps being a free, open, and vibrant organization of Filipino content editors. Since 2019, the community has organized the WikiGap Campaign in the Philippines to close the gender gap and other diversity gaps on Wikipedia. It has also conducted activities that aim to build content on Philippine minority language-based Wikimedia projects including the Rinconada Bikol Wikipedia, Bikol Wikipedia, and Bikol Wiktionary.
We also conduct activities to reach more people both online and offline thru collaboration with groups, organizations and institutions. The "Wiki Loves" photography contests have proven to have a considerable impact on our Wikimedia activities. Offline activities such as photography walks have engaged new contributors and volunteers.
This year, we identified the following activities: Sustain women participation in our activities thru WikiGap Campaign; WikiWomen Camps; Create contents on significant women in the society in all fields thru WikiProyekto Kababaihan, 100 wikidays challenge; Conduct photography walks in different localities thru gathering and categorizing of images; Conduct informal/formal discussions thru Wiknics and Meetups, seminars and forums; Conduct uploading sessions thru WPWP Campaign and participation in Wiki Loves contests.
Results
editThis year, we organized the Preservation of old publications through Bikol Wikisource, and WikiCommons PH Conference 2023, a 3-day national conference with the theme Preserving Our Heritage: Safeguarding Digital Assets Through Wikimedia. These conferences brought together participants from different Wiki Loves photography contests from various parts of the country, photography enthusiasts and heritage advocates with the aim to strengthen collaboration. For 6 consecutive years, the Philippines has been promoting Wiki Loves Earth competition which has received over 6,000 images now available under creative commons license.
- August 20-21, 2023 - Wiki Loves Earth PH Team conducted a photography walk in Sorsogon with the guide of from the Local Government Unit of Bulusan explaining the history and topography of Lake Bulusan. The activity was led by Marvin Molin and participated by new and past participants.[9]
- November 1-30, 2023 - During the the month-long Bulan kan Asya nin Wikipedia 2023 campaign, a total number of 343 articles were created.
- November 25 - Diversity program committee chair Glenda Perico-Brioso, a senior high school teacher at Camarines Sur National High School, organized the Wiki Women Meet-up event in support of Wikimedia movement’s advocacy to promote inclusivity and improve the representation of women across Wikimedia projects. The meet-and-greet event attended by youth and women sectoral leaders, young professionals, and mothers including 2 grandmothers, was held during the nationwide kickoff of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW).
- PhilWiki Community president Maffeth Opiana-Sto. Tomas shared her recent participation at WikiWomenCamp held in New Delhi, India where over 100 women from diverse backgrounds and expertise discussed experiences and planned on how they can reduce the gender gap on the internet and in the Wikimedia movement. The attendees shared their insights about possible activities they can conduct in the future and the strategies on how more women can participate.
- Sheena Aiza Bagachina, a senior high teacher from CSNHS, articulated that Wiki Wowen can provide a supportive community for personal and professional growth and that she sees a great future for the advocacy. Amparo Vergara, a participant from the women sector of the Naga City People’s Council, expressed her appreciation to the group. Ellen Nicole Vergara, the current Naga City Youth Mayor, suggested possible activities in the future.[10]
- December 6, 2023 - Two participants in Wiki Loves Earth 2023 in the Philippines won in the international round. Mark Kineth Casindac won the 5th prize (in the category Macro/close-up) worldwide in Wiki Loves Earth 2023 and Michael Angelo Luna whose photograph of Taal Volcano from Agoncillo, Batangas was adjudged as one of the 10 best images for the special nomination “Human Rights and Environment” that capture the impact of human activity on the environment from the whole world.
- December 19, 2023 - A gastronomic journey at La Herencia Comida in Naga City was held as an outreach activity for the Wiki Loves Food Philippines 2023. A food photography session was conducted by the WikiCommons PH Conference participants. The competition aims to promote the Filipino cuisine, and the rich cooking traditions and practices in the Philippines.[11]
- March 7, 2024 - Jesse Alegre won the 1st Place in Wiki Loves Food Philippines 2023 for his entry entitled Sinigang na Hipon. His winning photograph depicts Sinigang na Hipon served hot is comfort food for a hard day's work. Its ingredients are shrimp, tamarind fruit, tomato, radish, water spinach, onion and garlic.
- March 31, 2024 - Wiki Gap Campaign in the Philippines concluded with 346 new articles closing the gender gap on Tagalog Wikipedia and Bikol Wikipedia!
- Celebrated during women's month, the Philippines has been participating the global campaign since 2019. The editing activity focuses on improving and creating new articles on women related topics using the Wikipedia Content Translation Tool.
- PhilWiki Community Diversity Committee and Wiki Women Filipinas program chair Glenda Perico-Brioso organized the month-long activity.
Partnership
editUnder our GLAM Program, PH-WC aims to tie up with past and new partner institutions. In the past we partnered with Iriga City Public Library, University of Nueva Caceres Library, Raul S. Roco Naga Public Library and James O'Brien SJ Library. Most recently, we conducted a forum at University of Nueva Caceres Museum. Through collaborations and mutual sharing of resources such as reference material, users of Wikimedia projects and the clientele of the library will benefit from the development of the Wikimedia projects. We shall nurture these institutional relationships in all fields.
This year, we identified the following activities: Conduct discussions in GLAM institutions thru meetings and discussions; seminars and forums; Conduct thematic celebrations thru digitization, editing campaigns; Organize a photo exhibit and feature winning photographs and best photos.
Results
editThis year, we had various activities conducted at the National Museum of Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of Fine Arts, Museo ni Jesse M. Robredo, Universidad de Santa Isabel Museum, Museo del Seminario Conciliar de Nueva Caceres (Holy Rosary Minor Seminary Museum) and the University of Nueva Caceres Museum. The organization engaged with these GLAM institutions to create linkages and access their valuable collections such as rare publications and manuscripts, and artifacts.
- August 4, 2023 - The Raul S. Roco Public Library of the City Government of Naga in Naga City, Philippines is the first GLAM partner institution of the organization. It recently hosted the Bikol WikiConference organized by Bikol Wikipedia Community in partnership with PhilWiki Community and the City Government of Naga. PH-WC and the city government signed a memorandum of understanding last August 4, 2023 to formalize the partnership of the two parties.[12]
- August 4-6, 2023 - Bikol WikiConference aimed to give opportunities for the participants to understand how Wikipedia works, how Wikipedia helps improve digital literacy skills in basic education, and how Wikipedia contributes in the revitalization of indigenous languages: to share information about Wikimedia projects with new and existing audiences and editors; to create a space for collaboration and the development of Bikol Wikipedia as a learning resource; and to reconnect and make new linkages with academic institutions and government agencies.[13][14][15]
- September 16, 2023 - Organized by GLAM Committee chair Francis Charles D. Brioso, PH-WC launched its first-ever GLAM Philippines outreach activities at the National Museums of Anthropology, Natural History and Fine Arts last September 16, 2023 attended by PhilWiki Community members and invited participants composed of teachers, and culture and Wiki Loves photo contests participants.[16][17][18]
- The main goal of this activity is to digitize documents, paintings, artifacts, and other collections from the National Museum to preserve and produce an open-access, freely usable content for the public.
- October 31, 2023 - During the culminating program of the 15th Bikol Wikipedia anniversary celebration, six (6) institutional partners were recognized by Bikol Wikipedia Community and Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group for their significant contribution and outstanding support, namely: Sumaro Bikolnon (since 2009), Ateneo de Naga University (since 2012), University of Nueva Caceres (since 2013), Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement (since 2015), Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (since 2017), and the Raul S. Roco Library (since 2018).[19]
- December 17-19 - The 3-day WikiCommons PH Conference 2023, a national conference of contributors on Wikimedia Commons, was organized in collaboration with Commons Photographers User Group, the City Government of Naga, University of Nueva Caceres Museum, Ateneo de Naga University - Social Sciences Department, Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges - Center for Rinconada Culture, and the Arts. The conference's theme was "Preserving Our Heritage: Safeguarding Digital Assets Through Wikimedia."[20][21][22]
- February 18 - Memorandum of Understanding signing of Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement Inc., Philippine Wikimedia Community Inc., and the Bikol Wikipedia Community to promote heritage advocacy and preservation through Wikimedia projects, programs and activities happened on February 18, 2024. The signing was then followed by a meeting with Wiki Loves Manuscripts team on the Bikol Wikisource activity which Bikol Wikipedia Community is planning to organize in partnership with PH-WC and NCHMI.
Pursuit of Purpose
editUnder our Capacity Building Program, it aims to develop and strengthen the members' skills and abilities, our organization's processes and resources that it needs to sustain, adapt, and grow. The community has initiated projects thru self-funding and volunteerism as its envisions itself to be a free, open and vibrant organization. It aims to achieve its goals thru cost-effective, creative and innovative projects and partnerships. To date, PhilWiki Community has forty-three (43) members.
This year, we identified the following activities: Organize and facilitate editing activities thru WikiGap, WPWP Campaign Philippines, Wikipedia Asian Month and others; Organize and facilitate photography contests thru Wiki Loves Folklore Philippines, Wiki Loves Earth Philippines, Wiki Loves Fashion Philippines, Wiki Loves Monuments Philippines, WPWP Campaign Philippines and others; Organize a conference for Wikimedians thru a national conference for contributors.
Results
editTo date, PhilWiki Community has eighty-three (83) volunteers. All (5) officers and a number of members participated as part of the organizing team and as presenters at Bikol WikiConference 2023. Two current board members and two past officers represented PhilWiki Community at Wikimania 2023 and Wikimedia ESEAP Strategy Summit 2023 held in Singapore. PH-WC president Maffeth Opiana attended the WikiWomenCamp 2023 in New Delhi, India wherein she served as part of the communications team composed of Wikimedians of different backgrounds. Maffeth and Glenda represented the User Group at the ESEAP Conference 2024 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia together with its founding chair Irvin P. Sto. Tomas where thepresented a session on Utilization of Wikimedia in Lessons.
The User Group has maintained a gender diverse board with Maffeth O. Sto. Tomas, its first female president, now serving her second term as the organization’s head. The new board reappointed Orasa as board chair, Altabano as treasurer, and Joseph Ciudadano as internal auditor with Bernadette F. Roco as the new secretary. Former board secretary Leah B. Sumalinog returned as a member of the board.
- August 4-6, 2023 Officers and members of the organization participated at the Bikol WikiConference as part of the organizing team and as presenters.
- Board secretary Maria Glenda Perico facilitated in the Training sessions 1 & 2 on Basic Rules in Wikipedia Introduction to Editing, while board secretary Marife Altabano facilitated in the Training session 3: Evaluating Articles and Sources on Day 1. On Day 2, former president Ralff Nestor Nacor led the Training sessions 4 & 5: Writing a Draft Article; and Sources and Citations, board member Francis Charles Brioso facilitated in the Training sessions 6: Plagiarism and Copyright Violation, while former board secretary Marvin R. Molin led the Training session 8: Contributing Images and Media Files on Wikimedia Commons. On Day 3, president Maffeth Opiana talked in the Plenary session 6: Wiki Loves Philippines while Marvin continued his discussion on Wikimedia Commons and Relicensing.
- Board chair Ian Kenneth Orasa and board secretary Marife Altabano served as the conference's Trust and Safety officers.
- August 15-16, 2023 Two current board members and two past officers represented PhilWiki Community at Wikimania 2023 and Wikimedia ESEAP Strategy Summit 2023 held in Singapore.
- One of the highlights of its participation in the ESEAP Affiliates meeting with Maki Katsuno-Hayashikawa, the director and representative of UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Jakarta to Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Timor Leste. Founding chair Irvin Sto. Tomas, current president Maffeth Opiana and board treasurer Marife Altabano attended the discussion.
- Former president Ralff Nestor Nacor and former PIO John Paul Collantees, attended photowalks organized by Commons Photographers User Group in Singapore and by Wikimedians in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
- October 20-22, 2023 - PH-WC president Maffeth Opiana attended the WikiWomenCamp 2023 in New Delhi, India. The conference with the theme "Map Up, Rise Up" brought together individuals who identify themselves as women from different countries of the Wikimedia movement.
- Maffeth served as part of the communications team composed of Wikimedians of different backgrounds.
- December 17-19, 2023 - The 3-day WikiCommons PH Conference 2023, a national conference of contributors on Wikimedia Commons, was held at Avenue Plaza Hotel, Magsaysay Avenue in Naga City, Bicol. This conference brought together participants from different Wiki Loves photography contests, photography enthusiasts and heritage advocates with the aim to strengthen collaboration and better understand the issues faced among the contributors, and to look for solutions.
- At the 3-day WikiCommons PH Conference 2023, a museum-hopping was conducted visiting GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) institutions namely Museo ni Jesse M. Robredo, Universidad de Santa Isabel Museum, Museo del Seminario Conciliar de Nueva Caceres (Holy Rosary Minor Seminary Museum) and finally, the University of Nueva Caceres Museum. Ian Christopher Alfonso, Officer-in-Charge - Research Publications and Heraldry Division (RPHD) of National Historical Commission of the Philippines, one of the speakers at the conference talked about Liberating Philippine Historical Sources. He shared about the national agency's project called National Memory Project which envisions to democratize Philippine history materials, especially the rare collection, unique items, and public domain materials found in the NHCP library, archives, or museums.
- March 16, 2024 - At Starmark Cafe in Naga City last March 16, active members gathered for the organization's annual meeting. Architect Ian Kenneth Orasa, Maffeth Opiana-Sto. Tomas and Marife Altabano were re-elected for another term while Leah Sumalinog and Badette Roco were chosen by the members to replace Francis Charles Brioso and Glenda G. Brioso. The new board reappointed Ian Kenneth as board chair, Maffeth as president, Marife as treasurer, and Joseph as internal auditor with Badette as the new secretary.
- May 10-12, 2024 - The ESEAP Conference 2024 was held n Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia with the Collaboration beyond the horizon. It was the third regional conference for Wikimedia communities throughout the ESEAP region. Affiliates sent their delegates to conference with Maffeth Opiana-Sto. Tomas and Glenda Perico-Brioso representing the Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group. Together with its founding chair Irvin P. Sto. Tomas, they presented a session on Utilization of Wikimedia in Lessons wherein as educators and Wikimedians they shared about the educational initiatives in the Philippines that can resonate with communities across ESEAP and beyond. The seesion provided a new approach to our fellow Wikimedian educators facing difficulties in incorporating Wikipedia into academic setting.
