This proposal has been approved. The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project. A committee member provided the following comment: Eligible language. You are encouraged to contribute on incubator:Wp/tay. Antony D. Green (talk) 19:30, 15 April 2017 (UTC) Approved on 2021-02-25, phabricator:T275803. --MF-W 18:24, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What | Value | Example / Explanation |
---|
Proposal | ||
---|---|---|
Language code | tay (SIL, Glottolog) | A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ... |
Language name | Atayal | Language name in English |
Language name | Tayal | Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ... |
Language Wikidata item | Q715766 - item has currently the following values:
|
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed. |
Directionality | LTR | Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)? |
Site URL | tay.wikipedia.org | langcode.wikiproject.org |
Settings | ||
---|---|---|
Project name | Wikipidia | "Wikipedia" in your language |
Project namespace | Wikipidia | usually the same as the project name |
Project talk namespace | spkayal Wikipidia | "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) |
Enable uploads | no | Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons. If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons. |
Optional settings | ||
Project logo | This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation). | |
Default project timezone | Asia/Taipei | "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones) |
Additional namespaces | For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk". | |
Additional settings | Anything else that should be set | |
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above. |
Proposal

- Support. This test has significant amount of activity for a long time and should have been approved long ago. --OosWesThoesBes (talk) 13:10, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
- Comment. Surprising amount of activity for a wiki whose request page (this page) has languished essentially unchanged for over a year. - dcljr (talk) 00:18, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

- Hi @Antony D. Green: I think the criteria are met: The project of Wikipedia Atayal is active, and the localized interface is done. Is it possible to ask for a final approval? What can we do now? Corainn (talk) 07:02, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- I cannot speak for ADG, or langcom as a whole (I'm just a regular wiki editor), but I notice that the "Project talk namespace" has not been filled out in the "Settings" above (provide a value for the "ns_project_talk" parameter in the "
{{New wiki request
" template call, at the very top when you edit this page — it should be an Atayal translation of the phrase "Wikipedia_talk"). The sysadmins will also need a logo when the wiki is created ("logo" parameter). I wish I had a convenient resource to link to about getting a logo for your wiki, but I don't remember if there is one. - dcljr (talk) 07:55, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

- Comment I don't know where you guys are coming from, but it's not helping. The top of the page may not be clear to people who aren't familiar with the ins and outs of Wikimedia project-making policy, but an Atayal Wikipedia has been approved. The only thing stopping it is that there aren't enough people working on it in the Incubator: incubator:Wp/tay. If you know the language and really want the Wikipedia, you need to go there and work on the Wikipedia; it need multiple people working on for several months to be approved.--Prosfilaes (talk) 20:03, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
- Comment Hi! Prosfilaes It has been an outcome exhibition of Aboriginal Languages Wikipedia held by the Ministry of Education these two days, so to promote this project, we encourage the Atayal people who attended this exhibition to leave some messages or edit entries. Vickylin77amis (talk) 02:20, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Vickylin77amis: since you said "we", I will assume you can pass on a message to the parties responsible for this explosion of comments. Please tell them that encouraging people to make these kinds of support votes for languages here at Meta is generally completely useless. Instead, as mentioned by Prosfilaes, people should be encouraged to make useful contributions to any relevant "test wikis" at the Wikimedia Incubator. Links to test wikis should be visible at the top of these "Request" pages, when such wikis exist. (Note that the same kind of explosion of comments happened on the same day at Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Sakizaya, and possibly other Request pages I am not watching.) - dcljr (talk) 05:16, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

Settings
editDear contributors, as the language committee intends to approve the creation of Atayal Wikipedia, please check and complete the wiki settings as indicated at the top of the page (like "Project talk" namespace name or the logo). I'm pinging the current highest contributors User:Miyahayung76, User:羅信, User:Ddtweawea, User:Iyumu, User:吉娃絲, User:Vickylin77amis, but please discuss the settings in the whole community on Incubator, if necessary. Since this is the first project in Atayal language, we also need the translations of all namespace names:
Media: Special Talk User User_talk $1_talk [= Project talk, e.g. Wikipedia talk] File File_talk MediaWiki MediaWiki_talk Template Template_talk Help Help_talk Category Category_talk

Besides, we would like to know how to create our own Wikipedia logo (the puzzle earth)? Thank you. Iyumu (talk) 06:11, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
- You could ask commons:User talk:Odder for the logo, it seems like he often creates translated logos. - About the namespaces, is it important that they all be written in lowercase letters? By default, they would all start with a capital letter. Also, would it be appropriate to keep "MediaWiki" written in that way to keep the "brand"? --MF-W 11:46, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
Dear MF-W, Thank you for the information about the logo. For the namespaces, it’s better to do with lowercase letters for us. In our language, we don’t even use capital letters in the beginning of the sentence. About the name of the brand, like “MediaWiki”, is acceptable for sure. Iyumu (talk) 00:49, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks. On further thought, I believe the first letter of the namespace will always be capitalized by default, so that's how I submitted it now. --MF-W 18:24, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
- @MF-Warburg: No, there's a setting for that, already used for Sakizaya Wikipedia that allows namespaces and page names to have lower-case first. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 10:34, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
- I see. Great! --MF-W 12:15, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
