Proposal

edit

1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

Life cycle of Pachliopta aristolochiae aristolochiae
documented during phase V of WLB.

Wiki Loves Butterfly (WLB) project is a continuous programme which has successfully completed four consecutive phases in the past years. At the time of applying for this grant proposal of WLB Phase VI, the second half of the WLB Phase V is in operation, of which the half yearly report has been submitted and the annual report is due in December 2022.

The overall purpose and vision of WLB is to increase the availability of free licensed contents pertaining to the butterfly taxons available in the eastern and north-eastern parts of India along with enrichment of related content in different Wikimedia sites targeting Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Bengali and English Wikipedia and Wikispecies. Under this program, we have organized detailed field documentation initiatives at several butterfly hot-spots in different reserve forests, tiger reserves and national parks located in different districts in West Bengal and north-east India for the last 5 consecutive years and documented several butterfly species and subspecies with their life cycle, morphology, behavioral practices, host and nectaring plants etc. The field data and contents collected from these extensive photo documentations were largely contributed to different Wikimedia sites as well as published in different peer reviewed scientific journals.

The program further aims in knowledge sharing, creating butterfly awareness among the general population, inspiring and mentoring new enthusiasts about the butterfly world and specially the world of Wikimedia movement and recruiting and training of new Wikimedia contributors and thus broadening the horizon of Wikimedia movement. To achieve this aim, we arrange butterfly photo-walks, co-organize national level butterfly meets with notable scientific organizations and conservationist trusts from all around the country, organize workshops and edit-a-thons among school students as well as other enthusiasts to introduce them to the world of Wikimedia and bring them under the purview of the same through our extensive outreach programme. We have also presented Digital conservation through knowledge sharing during Wikimania 2022 to share our mission and purpose to the global Wikimedia movement at large.

This fund proposal, if successful, will usher new hopes to the team and bring further prospect of extending our butterfly documentation and knowledge sharing programme in remaining hotspots and districts of far north east India from where very little content and data have yet been registered on Wikimedia sites. These hotspots are at very distant locations with poor transportation and communication facilities and thus very costly to reach. There are no regular public transportation systems most of the time, hence long travels through air and roads happen to be the only solution. As the majority of the WLB team members are students, the Wikimedia funding helps us immensely to make these journeys possible.

WLB, being a continuous scientific documentation programme on a very specific subject of butterflies happening for the last six consecutive years, this grant proposal is thoroughly linked with the previous works and learnings. This WLB Phase VI shall be a vivid upgradation over the past work and learning as well as deriving a new spectrum of workmanship with newer learning.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Under this phase, we aim to document more and more butterfly species in newer zones of eastern and north eastern India, which were previously not explored by our team. We also plan to start documenting butterfly species available in the neighboring state of Odisha from this phase, which was completely untouched in our previous phases and has no data on Wikimedia till now.

Like previous years, we will continue to share knowledge and build awareness of butterfly and Wikimedia movement among people in general, create and mentor new wiki contributors, enrich Wikimedia sites with more images and contents etc. All of these are a continuous process which we are executing with our efforts and dedication to Wikimedia for the last 5 consecutive years. From this point of view, the present proposal holds no difference from our previous proposals, rather it can be said as a targeted upgradation and development of our previous ones.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

We have adopted different strategies to ensure impactful output

  • Strong team: WLB has built a strong team over years with dedicated and passionate butterfly enthusiasts, amateur and professional photographers, lepidopterists and researchers. The team members have nice bonding and understanding with each other to plan and execute the hectic activities successfully.
  • Connections: The team has close associations with renowned lepidopterists and book authors from different parts of India, who are providing valuable inputs to our work over the years. The team has also developed a strong network of forest officials, resource persons from like-minded organizations, school authorities which has helped to increase the reach of the project.
  • Leadership development: WLB program is designed in such a way that newbies can be groomed to bring leadership potential out of them, so that they can lead, plan and execute the hectic field documentations and deliver impactful output.
  • Flexibility and optimization: Wikimedia Community Fund will give us the flexibility to move several teams at a time in a prospective butterfly month to different hotspots. During the WLB phase V, we had moved 4 teams to 4 different zones covering 3 provinces simultaneously at a time during the most prospective butterfly month of September. This flexibility helps us to optimize our efforts to document as many butterfly species as possible during the peak seasons.
  • Affiliate support: WLB has had strong affiliate connections with the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group since the beginning, which has provided all necessary support needed be it in grant-making, reporting, logistics etc. and have helped maintain the autonomous workflow of the team.

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

An outreach program engaging students of a school in Sikkim on how to capture photographs of butterflies

The activities of this phase will be as follows:

  • Field documentations: Teams will be sent to butterfly hotspots located in reserve forests, wildlife sanctuaries etc. in eastern and north-eastern parts of India in the states of West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura to photodocument different butterfly species available there. Photographs will be brought back, species and subspecies will be identified.
  • Content creation: Photographs taken during these field-documentations will be subsequently uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, relevant Wikidata items will be enriched and Wikipedia articles and Wikispecies pages will be created.
  • Outreach: The team will spread awareness about butterflies, environmental conservation and Wikimedia among the general population by organizing photo-walks in different hotspots located in West Bengal inviting amateur and professional photographers and butterfly enthusiasts, partnering with few schools located in West Bengal and Sikkim to spread awareness among students etc.
  • Partnership: The team will be in close contact with renowned lepidopterists and book authors on the subject to get regular advice from them. Like previous years, WLB will be co-organizing national and regional level butterfly meets with like-minded organizations operating in different parts of the country.
  • Skill development: Regular workshops to develop skills around Wikimedia for both new and experienced volunteers will be organized to engage them in a fruitful way.
  • Meetups: As the team has worked together for six consecutive years, it is now very important for us to meet regularly with each other and try to sustain ourselves for the future. We will be using and maintaining a meetup space along with other different team members of our core supporting affiliate i.e. West Bengal Wikimedians User Group.

5. Do you want to apply for multi-year funding?

No

5.1 If yes, provide a brief overview of Year 2 and Year 3 of the proposed plan and how this relates to the current proposal and your strategic plan?

N/A

6. Please include a timeline (operational calendar) for your proposal.

Here we have our tentative schedule of month wise field documentation and data collection programme and other related programs, but field documentation and data collection operation are largely dependent upon the weather condition and accessibility of that particular zone in a particular month. Moreover, the winter months (December, January and February) in eastern and north-eastern part of India are non productive and rather dull in terms of butterfly activity. The other programmes (apart from the field documentation and data collection) viz, organizing photo-walk, workshop, national level butterfly meet etc are largely subjected to the availability of optimal number of participants, acquiring permission in reserve forests etc. Hence minor changes and/or reshuffling may occur in the operational calendar in due course.

8. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Important Topics (topics considered to be of impact or important in the specific context)

8.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

A live gynandromorph butterfly spotted in a WLB fieldtrip, which was not documented ever before in India.

Our documentation process covers a vast geographical area of our country. We cover butterfly hotspots in wildlife sanctuaries, reserve forests, marshlands, urban greeneries in different parts of India which has resulted in vast documentation of butterfly taxons along with their respective host plants, nectar plants, morphologies, life cycles, habitats, behavioral aspects etc. Many of our photographs are the only photographs available of live butterfly species or subspecies on Wikimedia Commons, bringing massive value to the program. Our images, data and newer scientific upgradation of available knowledge and their subsequent contribution to different segments of Wikimedia has been reducing the knowledge gaps related to photographic contents, concerned data and information in a considerable way.

9. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Climate Change and sustainability

10. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities? Please note, we had previously asked about inclusion and diversity in terms of CONTENTS, in this question we are asking about the diversity of PARTICIPANTS. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Gender Identity, Geographic , Linguistic / Language

11. What are your strategies for engaging participants, particularly those that currently are non-Wikimedia?

An outreach photo-walk organized at a forest in 2022 to engage new participants

The WLB project has been engaging new participants who were previously not at all aware of the Wikimedia movement. We organize butterfly photo-walks and workshops, co-organize national level butterfly meets where butterfly enthusiasts from different parts of the country congregate. In those events, we discuss and share knowledge and expertise, present videos, distribute leaflets and swag materials regarding the usage and purpose of Wikimedia and its different segments. We inspire them in the values and principles of Wikimedia, mentor and guide students, connect with resource persons, butterfly researchers and lepidopterists so that they can engage with us to enter into the open knowledge world of Wikimedia. Furthermore, we provide them with our tutorials about how to open Wikimedia accounts and to contribute images and data on Wikimedia sites. Our social media pages also engage and invite enthusiasts to contribute to WLB and Wikimedia at large. Our team members inspire, mentor and motivate local enthusiasts to become new Wikimedia contributors through the WLB project. Thus through our extensive outreach program, we have succeeded to include many students, research scholars, butterfly book authors, lepidopterists and collaborated with notable scientific organizations of the country like The National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Nature Mates, Butterflies and Moths of Sikkim-Nature Conservation Society (BAMOS-NCS) etc.

12. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants and promoting the UCOC and Friendly Space Policy, and/or equivalent local policies and processes?

As WLB operates under the umbrella of the West Bengal Wikimedia User Group, we strictly follow the Code of Conduct adopted by the user group back in 2018, which aims to ensure friendly interaction and non-discriminatory environment for all participants. Opinions, suggestions, concerns and objections of every participant are adhered, discussed, cordially considered, fixed and settled nicely ensuring a sweet family atmosphere with strong mutual bonding. Newcomers are caringly mentored, guided and tutored by more experienced members on a regular basis.

13. Do you have plans to work with Wikimedia communities, groups, or affiliates in your country, or in other countries, to implement this proposal?

Yes

13.1 If yes, please tell us about these connections online and offline and how you have let Wikimedia communities know about this proposal.

A presentation during Wikimania 2022

The WLB team is strongly supported by West Bengal Wikimedians User Group, which has supported the program since the beginning in different ways and will help in implementing this phase too.

14. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedian partners to implement this proposal?

Yes

14.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

WLB team has been engaging with renowned lepidopterists from notable scientific organizations of the country like NCBS, BNHS and environmental organizations like Nature Mates, BAMOS-NCS etc. in the past to get valuable inputs for the contents generated by the program and co-organizing national level butterfly meets with Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve authority, World Wildlife Federation and like-minded organizations like Society for Education and Environmental Development (SEED), Act for Butterflies, Ashoka Trust For Research In Ecology And The Environment (ATREE), Ahuvidha, Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), Aranyak, Bodoloand Ecotourism and Conservation Trust (BECT), Flutters, NgunuZiro etc. in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for last few years. These partnerships will continue in this phase too to ensure generating quality content for WLB.

15. How do you hope to sustain or expand the work carried out in this proposal after the grant?

An extremely dedicated and passionate team, ever-growing partnerships with experts and like-minded non-Wikimedia organizations and a strong local affiliate support in the background are the strengths behind WLB, which made it possible to sustain and expand itself for the last six years. Over the years, we have designed our workflow to coordinate efficiently among different stakeholders and optimize our activities to deliver impactful quality content. We have also succeeded in attracting new participants to engage with us and join our cause and brought leadership potential out of them, which has helped us replenish and rotate our team. We confidently hope that all of these hard-earned developments will inspire and motivate us to continue and expand our activities even after this grant period is over

16. What kind of risks do you anticipate and how would you mitigate these. This can include factors such as external/contextual issues that may affect implementation, as well as internal issues, such as governance/leadership changes.

As our project largely depends on field exploration programs and rapid inter-province movement, we do anticipate a few unavoidable risk factors for this grant proposal.

A subsequent wave of COVID-19 pandemic might hamper and hinder our extensive field programs. Although all our team members are fully vaccinated, still risk factors sustain on account of a newly mutated variant strain of the virus. If we face such a condition, where we have to restrict our movements again, we shall have to take recourse to our “Document at your respective backyards” policy which we tried during previous waves of the pandemic with considerable success in terms of number of documented species and uploaded images and data. The numbers will not be as high as field-documentations, but as we have team members from different parts of India, the diversity of the species will surely be documented.

Weather hazards like excessive rain, prolonged monsoon and calamities like flood , landslide etc very often happen in the districts of north-eastern Indian states, which leads to disruption of communication and transportation making the already distant and remote hotspots completely inaccessible. We study weather reports regularly, which will help us to reschedule our field exploration programmes accordingly, if such conditions arise.

17. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of three options that most apply.

Coordinate Across Stakeholders, Invest in Skills and Leadership Development, Identify Topics for Impact

18. Please state if your organization or group has a Strategic Plan that can help us further understand your proposal. You can also upload it here.

No

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation

edit

19. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

We are in a continuous learning process while planning and executing WLB for the last six years on different aspects. In these years, we have learned how to build a great team, coordinate and optimize the efforts among team members, handle our logistics in an effective way, deliver impactful output and use donation money in a transparent and cost-effective way. Still, we have a lot to learn. We hope to engage more school students this year and penetrating young minds can be a real learning experience. We acknowledge that our efforts towards documenting our workflow and activities are not sufficient and we will definitely work on that in this phase. As we are planning to work in the forests located in the state of Odisha for the first time in this phase, we will also learn the dynamics there, as we have learned while working in the north-eastern states before. We hope we will gain more experience than ever, which will be useful in our coming phases in the future.
