Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

  • Photo-competitions
    • Wiki Loves Food 2021 in India: The photo competition was discontinued and we would like to conduct the 2021 iteration of the program.
    • Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in India: The user group has experience of successfully conducting the Indian iteration of the Wiki Loves Monuments. We have lead the programme in India in 2020, 2019, and 2018 and this year also we would like to conduct the 2021 iteration of the competition
  • Proofread events
    • Rabimas (Rabindranath month) proofreading contest, proofread contest on the selected works of poet and writer Rabindranath Tagore. This will be the third iteration of the contest
    • British Library, Two Centuries of Indian Print proofreading contest
    • At least 6 online proofreading campaigns on Bengali Wikisource.
  • Photo documentations:
    • Banglar Utsav (Festivals of Bengal), with the direct involvement of the community members we would like to work on photo-document the festivals of Bengal.
    • Documenting Kolkata Heritage, photo documentation of heritage buildings and places in Kolkata, West Bengal
  • 125th birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose
23 January 2022 marks the 125th birth anniversary of Indian freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose. A year-long commemoration and celebration will be organised in India by different organisations and institutions.[1][2] We, the members of West Bengal Wikimedians User Group, would like to conduct the following activities in 2021–2022 (before 23 January 2022, please see a related blog post on Diff)
    • Proofread contest: a proofread contest will be conducted on Bengali Wikisource to improve the literary works of Subhas Chandra Bose.
    • Stuctured data improvement on Wikidata: We'll improve content related to Bose and his life on Wikidata.
    • Photo documentation: We would like to visit at least 1 museum/cultural centre related to Bose and upload freely licensed audio-visual content on Wikimedia Commons.
    • Pronunciation project on Wikimedia Commons: Using LinguaLibre or similar tool, we'll upload Bengali pronunciation of names of people, places, literary works etc associated with Subhas Chandra Bose. The files can be used on Wikidata, Wikipedia and other projects. We'll upload at least 500 pronunciation files.
  • Digitisation:

Prabir Ghosh, a famous rationalist from West Bengal, who has advocated against pseudoscience and mysticism throughout his life, released copyright of 6 of his books under CC-BY-SA 4.0 license in 2019.
    • Documentation of at least 1 small library/museum in West Bengal.
    • Scanning of approx. 5,000 pages of public domain Bengali books.
  • Infrastructure:
    • At least 1-2 emergency hardware maintenance support for active Wikimedians: Active members of the user group sometimes need support to repair their laptops or hardware. In the past, we have seen hardworking Wikimedians' contribution getting hampered sometimes. We would like to have a small component in our annual work plan to provide emergency hardware maintenance support for active Wikimedians.

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

The community members from West Bengal were asked to place project proposals for which they require funds here. This was followed by a community call (20 December 2020) and a user group representative members' call (21 December 2020).
  • Bengali Wikisource community has been notified on the scriptorium.
  • Bengali Wikipedia community has been notified on the village pump.
  • West Bengal community has been notified at the mailing list.

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

Most of the programs proposed in this plan are ongoing. After the completion of the activities, we would conduct an evaluation meeting with the program leads and general members of the user group. Other than the general report, we'll prepare an evaluation report to be published on Meta-Wiki or Diff (or both) The learning will be reflected in next year's program plan.

Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

We are thoroughly following the instructions given by the Wikimedia Foundation. None of our proposed in-person event will be larger than 10 people. We'll follow local health guidelines, as mentioned in #1, and #2 of the risk-assessment protocol.
